What is Gratuity in Oman?
Gratuity in Oman is an end-of-service benefit paid by employers to employees when they leave their job after completing at least 1 year of continuous service.
Under Oman's new Labour Law (Royal Decree 53/2023, effective July 31, 2023), both Omani and expatriate workers receive one full basic salary per year of service, with proportional calculation for partial years.
The previous law (before July 31, 2023) used 15 days for the first 3 years and 30 days per year after. Transition rules apply if your employment started before the new law—service before July 31, 2023 may be calculated under the old formula.
A gratuity savings system under the Social Protection Law is expected to replace this calculation by July 2026. Use our Oman gratuity calculator to estimate your entitlement under the current law.
Oman Gratuity Calculation Formula
Formula
1 month basic salary per year of service
- New law (Royal Decree 53/2023): 1 full basic salary × years of service
- Proportional calculation for partial years (e.g. 5.5 years = 5.5 months salary)
- Minimum 1 year of service required
- Applies to both Omani and expatriate workers
- Calculated on basic salary only (last basic wage)
- Transition: If you started before July 31, 2023, service before that date may use old formula (15 days first 3 years, 30 days after)

Gratuity Calculation Examples
Example: Oman Gratuity – 5 Years (New Law)
Basic Salary: OMR 800/month
Years of Service: 5 years
Calculation:
1 month × 5 years = 5 months. Gratuity = 800 × 5 = OMR 4,000
Example: Oman Gratuity – 3 Years 6 Months
Basic Salary: OMR 600/month
Years of Service: 3.5 years
Calculation:
Proportional: 3.5 years × 600 OMR = OMR 2,100
